Lay Summary

The purpose of this study is to investigate the inter-relationship between mortality, age and access to anti-cancer therapy for MM patients. This relationship will also be extended to other factors, including demographic, geographical and factors associated with cancer. This is important because there are concerns that older patients with cancer may not be receiving cancer treatment when compared with younger patients. It is therefore important to identify whether there is a specific age after which the chances of receiving anti-cancer therapy are more or less likely. This study will examine this relationship and attempt to determine whether such inequalities vary over the UK using data from existing registries.

Technical Summary

The objective of this study to interrogate the relationship between mortality (survival), age, geographical factors and the probability of access to anti-cancer therapy in MM patients. This study will also determine whether inequalities of access to anti-cancer treatments exist in England. Statistical models (including flexible parametric models) will be used to compare mortality rates across several factors including demographic, geographic and prognostic factors (e.g. Stage, Histology).
